Over the past 12 months, every big social media platform seems to have been introducing Stories as one of its options. Only a couple of them are still resisting the trend, and this phenomenon has been the source of many jokes among the online community.
If you only use social media on your computer, you may not have noticed anything. But if you are a faithful user of their smartphone application, you have probably been noticing the apparition of Instagram Stories, Messenger Day, and even Whatsapp Status on your favorite networks. But what exactly is a story, and why are they so popular?

The Story is a concept that was first introduced to us by the
social network Snapchat, a network based in its entirety on the
short life-span of its shared content.
It is an option that allows users to quickly and easily post a
picture or a short video of what they are doing. This picture or
video is viewable by his or her followers or friends, depending
on the platform, for 24 hours, and will then self-destruct. The
use of this option is to give people’s friends a quick overview of
what’q happening in their day.

Trendy, but not always welcomed
If Snapchat was first to introduce this option, other popular social media platforms were quick to realize how much users enjoyed the idea and went on to seize it.
Instagram, a social network also based on the sharing of pictures and vidoes, was the first to follow in April 2016. So far, nothing too surprising.

But a little less than one year later, the alternative SMS and calling application Whatsapp jumped on the bandwagon with its Whatsapp Status. The following month, the chatting application Facebook Messenger launched Messenger Day. Just a few weeks after that, the main Facebook application itself was on its heels and presented its Facebook Stories.
For faithful Snapchat users, those copies coming from other social network applications annoy, and seem useless even, because they are unadapted to their new media.
However, it is not crazy to think that Whatsapp, and even more so Facebook, could overtake Snapchat when it comes to Stories. These two applications do reach a much larger audience than Snapchat. Nowadays, only few people do not have Facebook accounts, and this new option allows them to stick with an application they are familiar with rather than have to download and learn to use a new application, only to do the exact same thing.
But why is it so popular?
On Facebook Messenger, Snapchat or Whatsapp, people send direct messages to their friends. However, no one wants to seem too clingy by sending too much at once, or by sending messages to people they are not close to.
On Instagram and Facebook, people post content on their profiles. On these platforms, maintaining a good image is everything, which means not posting anything and everything all the time.
In short, a Story enables you to post more, without tarnishing your image. Only the people who actually want to will watch your Story, and the content is separate from your profile and will only stay online for 24 hours. Furthermore, people to who you wouldn’t normally send a direct message will also be able to see it. This is a great plus in the world of social media, where the goal is to be seen as much as possible.
Who will be next?
Among the giants, only Twitter hasn’t joined in on the trend yet, and some of its users are even begging it to never do. Actually, this trend would be rather useless to the platform, considering that it is already made for people to continuously express themselves. And, notably, the four applications where Stories, were added all belong to Facebook.
